But there is one big problem that I haven’t seen anyone touch on. One major change from the canon that leads to all of the smaller problems with Irene. One major change that is at the core of what pulls the rug out from under those of us who loved the original Scandal in Bohemia story. One major change that betrays a complete misunderstanding of the point of A Scandal in Bohemia and the real reason Irene Adler could win against Sherlock Holmes and walk away from him scott free holding everything she ever wanted.

Stephen Moffat and Guy Ritchie made the exact same mistake that a million fanfic and pastiche writers have before them. They looked at the Rogues Gallery of Sherlock Holmes for a formidable female villain, someone with potential for romance and intrigue, and picked out the perfect-seeming Irene Adler. This is understandable. She’s popular among fans, particularly female ones. She’s one of his best known opponents, possibly the best known after Moriarty. She looks good in a suit. Her story involves political and sexual intrigue. She’s cunning and resourceful. She won.

There’s just one small problem.

Irene Adler isn’t actually in the Rogues Gallery of Sherlock Holmes.

Look back at A Scandal in Bohemia. She’s not the bad guy. She’s the good guy. Sherlock’s client is the bad guy, wrongly pestering his ex-girlfriend and painting her as a extortionist when all she wants to do is live her life. He lied to Sherlock Holmes. Her explanation for trying to keep a little insurance against future bad behavior from this man is perfectly understandable. The entire story is a misunderstanding.

And that, more than anything else, is why she got to win. Because in addition to being his equal, beating him fair and square, she was also on the side of right and he was the manipulated one.

Listing her among his “villains” is like listing Spider-man as a Daredevil villain.

This was originally written in response to A Scandal in Belgravia and A Game of Shadows, but I think it applies equally to Elementary’s interpretation of the character.

One other thing not touched on in this section but also pointed out in the article is particularly germain to Elementary’s choices: Irene is memorable because she beats Sherlock. Elementary did a good job of trying to preserve that, but when they turned her into Moriarty, they guaranteed she wouldn’t win, not in the end, not really. She would never be allowed to waltz off into the sunset and live happily ever after, which is her great victory in Scandal. Irene Adler, average citizen, is allowed to show up the great detective. Irene Adler, average citizen, is the person we should feel good rooting for, and the person who deserves to come out on top. But Moriarty?

Moriarty is a villain, and villains have to lose.

My morning in two gifs:

Enjoying Daft Punk’s new album immensely,

and dealing with my mother’s passive aggressive behavior this morning.

(and lord knows I’m one to talk sometimes! Let me tell you, kids, what I’ve finally learned about the insidious nature of the passive aggressive tendency in a personality - the extreme impulse to not let your annoyance and irritation at someone show is so strong that you’d do anything to avoid conflict because you have learned to fear the reactions of other people. You fear their anger and fear having a fight and fear they will leave you because of whatever conflict you started. But I say you cause ten times more trouble avoiding conflict than simply stating your grievances and just talking through it. My mom is so bad that even with the littlest things, like this morning, she would rather deny she’s angry or annoyed when it is obvious she is than actually USE WORDS to describe WHY she’s angry or annoyed. Therefore, I am left with no opportunity to solve anything while she walks around “acting normal” while visibly still bothered. And LORD, I am guilty of the exact same behavior I’m complaining about. One of my best buds has taken the brunt of this many times (and never put up with it, thank god). It’s insidious because it’s unintentionally selfish. You, the one who avoids conflict, will probably readily trick yourself into believing you are helpless against the impulse to not express your anger - “I don’t want to get into a fight with my friends because I don’t want them to be mad at me because if there’s any hint of unrest between us they will leave me.” “I don’t want to be perceived as “a bad person” by my friends.” I don’t want to be the one to cause trouble.” But you are fighting a losing battle because emotions can not be commanded like that- as much as you don’t understand your feelings, you are feeling them anyhow and it will have to come out somewhere. Sometimes you just clam up like my mom and wait for it to “blow over” while everyone wonders what the hell your problem is, and other times you just swallow it and convince yourself nothing bothers you, and worst of all, you might even have learned how to not register being bothered in the first place. Unfortunately, this behavior does nothing but push others away despite all your efforts to keep people close.

Internally, you:

-don’t have enough self-worth or even sense of self to stand up for yourself

-believe that the more conflicts you start and issues with friends you have, the higher the likelihood they will ditch you; it doesn’t matter how many years you’ve known them or what you’ve been through together.

Externally, you

-push others away because you never give them the opportunity to work through any problems you might be having.

-are unfair to others because you are angry but will not speak. No one deserves to be stonewalled. No one can defend or explain themselves if you won’t speak up.

Seriously, if you are afflicted by this tendency, strive to change it! Whether intentionally or not, you are still manipulating and controlling the situation by withholding feelings from people. Yes, you are being manipulative and dishonest by this behavior - if that distresses you like it did me, and if you care anything about your friends at all - you will unlearn this nasty habit that causes more trouble than it avoids.
